DMC honors new nurses, also holds cap ‘n badge

By Tyrone Jay V. Samson

The DMC College of Nursing held a testimonial banquet for the June 2009 National Licensure Examination for Nursing passers at the DMC College Foundation Auditorium last August 15.

The formal affair was attended by DMC president, Atty. Alberto P. Concha Sr., who gave an inspirational message to the new nurses, and the teaching staff of the College of Nursing (BSN) headed by their dean, Dr. Ma. Grace Gurdiel.

“We are very happy here in BSN that out of the 92 passers from DMC, 45 of them attended our testimonial banquet with their parents. In fact, six new nurses offered their personal and heartfelt testimony to the grind of studying, the quality of guidance and teaching of their clinical instructors, and the feeling of bliss and relief after passing,” Gurdiel said.

Giving their testimony that night were registered nurses Franzel Ray Acbay (Magna Cum Laude), Aprilie Ocampo (Cum Laude), Elvira Acbay, Ryan Roy Camarillo, Roy Abanggan, and Vivian Ricamora.

According to Gurdiel, one of the highlights of the night was the intermission number performed by clinical instructors “doing their best impression” of Wondergirls’ “Nobody” and Lady Gaga’s “Poker Face”.

“This is the first time that CI’s actually showcased their talent in dancing for the students, it was supposed to be the other way around,” Gurdiel added.

The “Dancing CI’s” are Clarissa Darcera, Jennifer Jarantilla Marilou Rgencia, April Te, and Maridol Claro.

Cap, Badge and Candle Lighting Ceremony

After giving due recognition and honor to the new nurses, DMC also gave sophomore nursing students something to aspire about and, in Dr. Gurdiel’s words, “inspire them to make the sacrifice and study harder to become registered nurses in the future.”

DMC GEARS UP FOR 35TH FOUNDERS DAY CELEBRATION

By Tyrone Jay V. Samson

DMC College Foundation is proud of its reputation of developing its students not just academically but also in literary, music and sports, and to celebrate such mission, the school will commemorate its 35th Founding Anniversary on August 20 to 22.

One of the eagerly-anticipated highlights of the three-day festivities are the Musical Night on August 20 and the Miss DMC Pageant on August 21 at the DMC open field.

Aside from that, the DMC community also boasts of additional events in sports and music this year. These include an acoustic song solo category in the Musical Night on August 20 and a night of Battle of the Bands on August 22. In sports, aside from the usual games such as basketball, volleyball, street soccer, chess and cyber games, this year will also feature a lawn tennis tournament and an Airsoft War Games competition.

“We promise a jam-packed three-day celebration. With students and faculty members working hand in hand to bring about the kind of unique and lively activities DMC is known for, we are optimistic of a successful 35th Founders Day,” DMC Student and Alumni Affairs Office dean and Founders Day over-all chair, Atty. Jordanne Chan-Antonio said.

Miss DMC, a spectacle

Miss DMC Pageant Chair Ramil Dominic Quirong proudly proclaimed that this year, “as always, we will showcase a night to remember, a Miss DMC pageant which will be a spectacle of sights and sounds.”

This year’s theme is Egyptian culture after last year’s Brazilian-themed affair. Quirong has even proclaimed that his committee has already planned the next five Miss DMC pageants.

Hoping to follow in the footsteps of 2008 Miss DMC Kates Michelle Naquila, first runner-up Mary Arth Balingit, and second runner-up Gene Catacutan are 10 lovely DMC students. They are Zandra Mae A. Tiu (BSN IV),Leah Renn Resurreccion (BSN IV), Clarizz G. Ruiz (BSN III), Nizza Nova R. Lisin (HRIM II), Elaine Ann S. Tungol (BSN II), Julie Sasuman (BSN I), Sanny Joy B. Carreon (Act II), Ma. Estela Selin (BSN II), Rakel Rose I. Bacareza (BSMT II), and Maricris C. Gutiera (BSBA III).

“I hope that you can visit us in this momentous affair. And I would like to take this opportunity to invite all other Miss DMC winners in the past years to come and celebrate with us this year. We will recognize you for being part of such elite fraternity of beautiful women. See you all on August 21,” Quirong said.

Alumni invitation, prizes await

Moreover, to give the alumni their deserved place in the spotlight, the DMC community is having a program called “Pakapalan ng Lahi.”

The said program highlights two contests for DMC alumni who can grace the three-day celebration.

The first is an individual contest wherein the first 100 alumni registrants (DMC employees are excluded) starting August 20 will receive free tickets in all major activities during the Founders celebration including the Musical Night (August 20), the Miss DMC (August 21), and the Battle of the Bands (August 22).

The second contest of the “Pakapalan ng Lahi” program is “by batch” category. The batch with the most number of registrants will receive “surprise prizes” from the DMC family.

DMC alumni can either register personally in the campus entrance starting August 20 or they can register through the internet by visiting the official website, www.dmc.edu.ph. Personal registration is good for one point while registration through the internet is good for .5 (1/2) point.

“We invite all DMC alumni to pay us a visit here in the Student and Alumni Affairs Office for further information. They can register with us here in the SAAO or in the website and win the ‘Pakapalan ng Lahi’ contest,” Alumni Affairs Coordinator Tyrone Jay V. Samson said.

More events this year

On August 20, there will be a Holy Mass from 7 to 8 in the morning at the Cathedral followed by a parade from Plaza Magsaysay to the Dipolog City Boulevard at 8 to 9:30. The opening program will be held at the DMC covered court from 10 in the morning up to 12 noon. Games such as the Friendship Airsoft War Games, basketball for men, volleyball for men and women, chess for men and women, street soccer for men, cyber games (Ghost Recon) for men, and lawn tennis for men and women is scheduled from 1 until 5 in the afternoon. To finish the day, the Musical Night will be held at the Open Field starting at 6 in the evening. Categories of the said Musical Night are acoustic competition (one singer and a guitarist), song solo (two songs each), modern dance (minimum of eight and max of 12 per group), and group impersonation (three to six members).

August 21 will feature a continuation of the games the whole day from 8 am to 5 pm, including a basketball game between DMC faculty and staff versus faculty members of Saint Vincent’s College at 11 am. Then, the much-awaited Miss DMC Pageant will begin at 7:30 pm in the open field.

On August 22, championship games will be played the whole day from 8 am to 5 pm including a game between the DMC Lifesavers and the SJC Seahawks at 10 am. The culmination night will be at 6 to 7 pm and to cap the celebration, there will be a Battle of the Bands starting 7:30 in the evening.

“In our quest to hold something new and innovative for our students, we will hold more sports events this year. Aside from the usual games such as basketball, volleyball, street soccer, chess and cyber games, we will also hold events such as lawn tennis and Airsoft war games. Also, we will hold a Battle of the Bands, and we will add one more category in our Musical night, which is the acoustic song solo,” Atty. Chan-Antonio quipped. “This year’s Founders celebration will surely be off the charts. I take my hats off to the different committee chairs and members, to the faculty and staff, and all the students for making this affair possible.”

40 kids learn to play ball with PBA cager Laure

By Tyrone Jay V. Samson

Forty young basketball players recently graduated in the Basketball Clinic organized by Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) player Eddie Laure.

Laure, who plays forward for the Rain or Shine (ROS) Elasto Painters, held his clinic at the DMC College Foundation basketball court last July 25 and 26.

Aside from Laure, the pool of trainers include Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) Zamboanga del Norte Coordinator Andot Silva, and Laure’s teammates during the Palarong Pambansa in his high school days such as Jojo Yu, Ramor Rabulan and Kikid Lopez.

The young participants were all given Voit basketballs and back-to-back ROS Elasto Painters’ jerseys.

“Next time, pag uwi ko, I will hold another basketball clinic. Balak ko talaga na magkaroon ng mas malaking event kaya lang, pagkaganun kailangan talagang may support from government officials,” Laure said.

The ROS forward added that he is even planning to hold a basketball tournament for basketball enthusiasts in Dipolog City. “Maganda rin sana kung mag organize tayo at magkaroon ng liga para may pagkakaabalahan ang mga kabataan at kasama ang kanilang mga magulang,” he said.

Laure also said that after his career as a player, he is planning to coach if the opportunity arises. He currently has one-year remaining in his ROS contract.

In parting, he had this to say, “Sa tanan nga mga taga Dipolog, salamat sa suporta at sa pagsubaybay sa larong basketbol. At sa mga batan-on nga magdudula, padayon lang gyud para malayo ta sa bisyo.”

DLSU Brother inspires DMC studes

By Tyrone Jay V. Samson

As part of his mission to introduce The Brothers of the De La Salle Philippines to students all over the Philippines, DLSP National Vocations director, Bro. Rey Mejias FSC, recently visited the DMC College Foundation for an inspirational talk.

Brother Rey was in DMC last August 4 to hold his campus information drive and talk in front of male high school and college students.

“I’m doing this to promote the Brothers in the whole Philippines because my job includes primarily, I will go to schools all over the Philippines including those that are supervised by the La Salle Brothers, such as DMC, because I want them to know the purpose of living and the whole dynamics of La Salle spirituality which subscribes to the La Sallian mission. This mission has something to do with educating the young, especially the poor, with Christian and human education,” Brother Rey said.

According to Bro. Rey, his other purpose is to invite young men to become Brothers. “One important value we need young men to have to become a Brother is he must be competent, and when we say competent, he must be a graduate of any degree in college. And precisely, he has to be spiritually-motivated because the Brothers are consecrated people so spirituality is very important. Faith in God is very important,” he added.

This visit to DMC is already the third stop of Brother Rey in his ongoing Mindanao-wide trip after previous visits to schools in Iligan and Ozamis. After here, he is also scheduled for talks in Cagayan de Oro, Malaybalay, Davao, Surigao and in Butuan. From there, he is going back to Manila.

“In terms of reception, it has been wonderful thus far and in fact I have received a number of interested applicants from my previous stops. I hope that my talk was also effective in this group and that one of these days they will contact me through the numbers and email address I gave them. I promise them one thing, they will gain more because they will be thought how to discern and they will spend more time with God. There is nothing bad that will come up out of good intentions. It’s always good results,” Brother Rey said.

DMC joins the mourning of Tita Cory’s death

By Tyrone Jay V. Samson

With the recent death of the Philippines’ icon of democracy – the plain housewife-turned-President, and celebrated peace and prayer advocate Corazon “Cory” Aquino, the DMC College Foundation joined the whole country in mourning the loss of such a steadfast figure in unity and, according to DMC College Foundation president, Atty. Alberto Concha Sr., “hands down, one of the greatest Filipinos to ever live.”

In honor of the memory of President Aquino, the DMC College Foundation joined the millions of Filipinos in prayer and remembrance by heeding to the declaration of August 5 as an official non-working holiday.

Students, faculty members and staff were given yellow ribbons to symbolize the virtues that President Aquino wished to impart to the Filipino people – hope, unity and love.

“This is our own little way of giving our tribute to a hero, our own little way of paying our respect to an icon, our display of sympathy and love to such a beloved figure and to her family. Cory Aquino was, is, and always will be a symbol of everything right in humanity. She is up there with Princess Diana in terms of giving hope to the hopeless, soothing the hearts of those who are cruel, instilling light upon wrongdoers,” Atty. Concha Sr. said. “Although this may be a sad day, let us not forget Cory’s legacy which is to stand for what is right. So let us join hands in celebrating her life. Long live Cory, and may she rest in peace.”

Maria Corazon Sumulong Cojuangco Aquino or Tita Cory as she is fondly called by Filipinos, died last August 1 of this year. Aside from being the Philippines’ (and the whole of Asia as well) first female President, she was also an advocate of democracy, peace, women’s empowerment, and religious devoutness. She served as the 11th President of the Philippines from 1986 to 1992.

BSN Cory ribbon

Married to Senator Benigno Aquino, Jr., a leading figure in the political opposition against the dictatorial of the late President Ferdinand Marcos, Tita Cory prided herself as being a “plain housewife”. After her husband was assassinated upon his return from exile in the United States on August 21, 1983, Tita Cory, who had no prior political experience, became a focal point and unifying force of the opposition that ousted Marcos. Thus, this “plain housewife” became the first female President in the history of the Philippines and also in the whole of Asia.

Among those who paid their respects to the late Tita Cory are President of Timor-Leste Jose Ramos Horta, President Gloria-Macapagal Arroyo, Marcos’ children Bongbong, Irene and Imee, former Presidents Fidel V. Ramos and Joseph Estrada, close friends and even security men, including practically all political foes and allies Tita Cory touched in one way or another, and an estimated 300,000 throng of well-wishers.

Internat’l org holds computer training in DMC

By Tyrone Jay V. Samson

Showing its wholehearted support for a cause of furthering computer literacy among our educators here in the province, the DMC College Foundation provided the venue and also offered its computer laboratories to the Save the Children organization for its Information Communication Technology (ICT) Training held at the DMC Campus in Dipolog City from August 3-7.

A total of 100 elementary school teachers from District 1 and 2 of the Municipality of Salug were on hand to benefit from the Education Quality and Access for Learning and Livelihood Skills (EQuALLS2) project implemented here in the province by the Save the Children organization with funding from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

“We need to keep abreast with what is going on in the computer industry. ICT Training is a project funded by the USAID. Our organization, which is called Save the Children, is an international non-government organization. We are implementing this project here in Mindanao,” Save the Children organization Education Assistant Manager Rodolfo Saavedra II said.

The pool of lecturers is from the Microsoft Company led by their team leader Peter Sanchez. The experts in the field of computer technology are Melanie De Borja, Dexter ray Magalang, Lucinda Bilog, Jeramel Burgos and Gijem Sanchez.

“They will train these elementary school teachers how to protect the computers against viruses, simple hardware troubleshooting, and help them in their jobs through Microsoft Office applications like Word, Excel and Powerpoint,” Saavedra added.

The ICT Training is the brainchild of the Global Development Alliance between the USAID and Microsoft with the objective of helping the Philippine government to address challenges in the Philippine education sector.

The EQuALLS2 project offers a core set of interventions aimed at increasing access to quality education for elementary school children, and relevant learning and livelihood skills training for out-of-school youth.

Here in Zamboanga del Norte, the EQuALLS2 project is implemented under the coordination of the Education Development Center (EDC) in partnership with the Department of Education (DepED) and the Save the Children organization. The EDC is a US-based non-profit organization.

As part of the project, the two district schools of Salug that participated will be given eight computers each including four printers for their use.

Save the Children, EQUALLS2 grateful to DMC

Save the Children Assistant Outreach and Communication Officer Janice Fay Sevilla expressed her gratitude to DMC College Foundation for its support for their project by allowing their computers and laboratory to be utilized for the said ICT training.

“In behalf of the Save the Children organization, we are thankful to the DMC College Foundation for lending us their computer laboratory. We have 100 participants, all of whom are from Salug, Sevilla said.

Moreover, she added that the 16 units of computers they donated are all brand new. “These computers are straight from the United States, and these are not assembled or cloned, high-tech gyud,” she said.

As for the Districts 1 and 2 of Salug, Sevilla said that they also have a part on the bargain. Both schools will provide a room for the computers. These rooms are to be air-conditioned and they will also provide security personnel especially during night time.

Also expressing their gratitude to DMC is EQUALLS2-USAID Materials and Technology Specialist Yvette Tan. “We are really grateful to DMC for accommodating us and the 100 elementary school teachers from Salug who learned basic computer literacy. Napakaganda ng mga facilities and the teachers were welcomed properly,” Tan disclosed.

DMC produces 92 more new nurses

By Tyrone Jay V. Samson

A total of 92 students from DMC College Foundation recently passed the National Licensure Examination (NLE) for Nurses given in the cities of Manila, Cebu, Cagayan de Oro, Pagadian and Zamboanga last June 6 and 7.

DMC College of Nursing dean, Dr. Ma. Grace Gurdiel, disclosed that out of the 92 students board passers, 74 of them are first-takers.

“In behalf of the DMC College of Nursing, we are very proud of all of you. This is yet another prestige for our school because with these 92 new passers, we can actually claim that we have produced more than a thousand registered nurses through the years,” Gurdiel said. “With this development, we hope that such performance and rating in the national board exam will finally lead us into PAASCU accreditation.” It must be noted that one criterion for accreditation with the Philippine Accrediting Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities (PAASCU) is “excellence in educational quality” and with its recent success in the national licensure exams, DMC is hoping to attain and maintain such status.

DMC studes pass Crim Board

Not to be outdone, the DMC College Foundation’s Criminology Department is also currently hugging the limelight these days under the stewardship of its dean, Atty. Arturo Nunag.

DMC Criminology Coordinator Renante Salvaña revealed that a total of three students passed the Licensure Examination for Criminologists, given in different cities all over the Philippines last April 16-18. The new criminologists are Anthony Omalsa, Cheryl Gilbero and Miala Gerodias.

“It is with great pride to see these students bring about honor and glory to the school of criminology here in DMC. In behalf of your teachers, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts. So, good luck in your career path of bringing about peace and security in your localities,” Salvaña said.

Moreover, Salvaña disclosed that to further improve the chances of students in future board examinations, they will conduct a review on major criminology subjects every Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. The review will be conducted by Police Superintendent Roderick Pausal and Police Officer 1 Rowell Cedeño.

President Concha speaks

With the encouraging feat of both the Nursing and Criminology departments, DMC president, Atty. Alberto P Concha Sr. revealed his satisfaction and elation in an interview recently.

“For the nursing passers, we have quite a good passing rate for first takers, which is 59%. That is a good performance compared to other schools most especially if we consider the fact that the national passing average is only 42%,” President Concha said.

He added that nursing students should go undergo intensive review before taking the NLE for nurses. He lamented that majority of those who failed are re-takers and that these students are no longer under school jurisdiction and they did not undergo any review whatsoever to help them prepare for the exam.

“To all new nurses, and also to the three new criminologists, I congratulate you all. Good luck in your careers. And for those who are to take the NLE next, I advise you to study hard and take your review classes very seriously. It might be expensive, but it will definitely increase your chances of passing the board exams,” President Concha added.
